This position is a 0.6 FTE Labour Relations Representative working for the Vancouver Island University Faculty Association (“VIUFA”). VIUFA is a union that represents approximately 650 full and part time members at Vancouver Island University. The membership of VIUFA includes counselors, technicians, librarians, Elders, and all instructors except those instructors working in the vocational and adult basic education areas.
Duties:
The Labour Relations Representative works closely with VIUFA’s Chief Personnel Steward and VIUFA’s Contract Negotiating Chair at the Nanaimo campus of Vancouver Island University on the unceded territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. The Labour Relations Representative will assist with all aspects of contract negotiations, grievance handling and Labour Relations Board matters.
Qualifications:
The successful applicant must have demonstrated ability in the following areas:
- Advocacy in both internal grievance handling and at arbitration;
- Collective Agreement negotiations including drafting of contract language and costing proposals;
- Working with committees;
- Working with a diverse membership;
- Written and oral communications; and
- Preferably, advocacy at the Labour Relations Board.
The successful applicant must have a Law degree or a professional credential, and at least 3 years of labour relations experience, preferably in the collective agreement area.
This is a permanent part-time position, beginning early December.
This position is a union position and the successful applicant will be represented by the Vancouver Island University Faculty Association component of CUPE 1004. The terms and conditions of the position are governed by a recently negotiated Collective Agreement between VIUFA and CUPE Local 1004 which expires March 31, 2025 and provides for a full range of benefits including pension and health benefits.
