LABOUR RELATIONS REPRESENTATIVE
Permanent Part-Time Position, In-Person
This position is a 0.6 FTE (21 hrs/week) Labour Relations Representative working for the Vancouver Island University Faculty Association (“VIUFA”). VIUFA is a union that represents approximately 650 full and part time members at Vancouver Island University. The membership of VIUFA includes counselors, technicians, librarians, Elders, and professors. VIUFA’s office is located at the Nanaimo campus of Vancouver Island University on the unceded territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation.
Salary and Schedule:
This position is typically Tuesday through Thursday in person at the VIU Nanaimo campus, though other schedules could be considered. The work is fast-paced and demanding, with a starting wage of $65.85/hour.
Duties:
The Labour Relations Representative works closely with VIUFA’s Chief Personnel Steward and VIUFA’s Contract Negotiating Chair. The day-to-day work is largely responsive to member inquiries and concerns about their working conditions in relation to the Collective Agreement; there is also considerable contact with Human Resources Advisors and the relevant Associate Vice-Presidents. The Labour Relations Representative will assist with contract negotiations, administration of the collective agreement, grievance handling, and other labour relations matters.
Qualifications:
The successful applications should reference ability in the following areas:
- Advocacy in both internal grievance handling and at arbitration;
- Working with committees;
- Working with a diverse membership;
- Written and oral communications; and
- Preferably, experience in Collective Agreement negotiations.
The successful applicant must have a professional credential associated with human resources or labour relations (law degree preferred), and at least 3 years of labour relations experience. A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
This is a union position, and the successful applicant will be represented by the Vancouver Island University Faculty Association component of CUPE 1004. The terms and conditions of the position are governed by a Collective Agreement between VIUFA and CUPE Local 1004, and provides for a full range of benefits including pension and health benefits.
