The VIU Faculty Association’s Status of Women Committee called upon community leaders, service providers, educators, activists, and citizens to participate in our second annual video campaign supporting 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, an international campaign led by the United Nations. View our 2020 campaign here.

This campaign runs from November 25, 2021 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to December 10, 2021 (Human Rights Day).

Our video campaign aims to raise awareness and to motivate action and accountability all year round. This year, we extended special invitations to vital organizations and educators to contribute informational videos about issues ranging from gaslighting, to pornography’s impact on children, to risk reduction strategies for BIPOC communities. We also made public calls to contribute, encouraging diverse delivery.

We will post at least one video for each day of this campaign here at the VIUFA Status of Women Facebook page.  Please share video links during 16 Days of Activism. Start conversations and take action to eliminate gender-based violence.

Join us and other organizers during these 16 days, and beyond, to advocate for inclusive, diverse, and culturally sensitive work that prioritizes anti-racism, decolonization, and gender diversity in the effort to eliminate gender-based violence.

In solidarity with the UN theme “Orange the World,” the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Nanaimo and VIUFA’s Status of Women Committee created two orange light displays for the period of Nov.25-Dec.10. One is located at the Bastion on Front Street in downtown Nanaimo, and other is located in the Quad area of VIU’s Nanaimo campus, near the Cafeteria and Malaspina’s Theatre. Banners, located at both locations, declare: UNiTE TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN.

Special thanks: to Robin Boxwell (VIU Theatre Department) for generously offering his technical expertise on this project; to the City of Nanaimo for their renewing their Proclamation in support of 16 Days of Activism; to every organization who contributed an informational video; to everyone who contributes a video, shares a message, enacts change, big or small.
